Agia Panayia -This tiny chapel has been built into a cave right at the top of the highest peak of the Lapithas Mountan (alt. 630 metres). The views are stunning, and the icons and votive offerings are intriguing. You will probably have the whole hill-top to yourselves, except on the saint’s day (August 15th – Panayia, a hugely important holiday in Greece, which will see thousands of people jostling their way through the tiny church – hence the one-way system for the foot-paths leading through the church). Feel free to light a candle, and try not to annoy the bats hanging from the roof!
